Sintra looks like a fairy tale — colourful palaces on hilltops, gardens full of ferns and fog rolling through the forest. It is also busy, rule-bound and a 40-minute trip from Lisbon, so a good plan makes all the difference.

Planning a photoshoot in Sintra
Sintra is a UNESCO-listed landscape of palaces, gardens and forest in the hills north-west of Lisbon. The most photographed places — the Pena Palace terraces, the gardens of Monserrate and the walls of the Moorish Castle — are managed by Parques de Sintra, which has clear rules for photo sessions. We plan everything around them so there are no surprises on the day.
The biggest factor is time. Tour groups arrive from mid-morning, so we aim to start at opening time or come late in the afternoon. The second factor is weather: Sintra has its own microclimate and is often cooler and mistier than Lisbon. We love the mist — it makes the forest look magical — but we always keep a backup in the village or on the coast.

The fee is set by Parques de Sintra and is paid at the monument's ticket office during opening hours — it cannot be paid in advance, and it does not give exclusive use of any area. Sessions must not block visitor routes. Quinta da Regaleira is run by a different foundation with its own rules. Because rules and fees can change, we check the latest conditions before your date.

Pena Park and terraces
The palace's yellow and red walls from the outside, the terraces and the forest paths around it. Best right at opening time.
Monserrate
A quieter palace in a botanical garden: lawns, exotic trees and romantic arches. Great for couples and maternity sessions.
Sintra village
Cobbled lanes, the National Palace's chimneys and pastel houses — no fee, easy access and a good rainy-day option.

Sintra session
A Sintra session costs €450 for two hours in Sintra with the photographer's travel from Lisbon included, and at least 100 edited photos. If we shoot inside the Parques de Sintra parks, the €150 heritage image fee is paid on the day at the ticket office, plus your own entry tickets if your group is larger than six. Combining Sintra with Cabo da Roca or Cascais on the same day? Ask for a quote.
Getting to Sintra for your session
Trains leave from Rossio station in central Lisbon and take about 40 minutes; from Sintra station you can walk to the village or take a bus or tuk-tuk up the hill to the palaces. A car or taxi is quicker if you are carrying outfits or travelling with kids. We can meet you in Sintra or travel with you from Lisbon — whatever is easier.
What to wear in Sintra
Bring a layer. Even in summer, Sintra can be several degrees cooler than Lisbon, and damp in the mornings. Rich colours — emerald, burgundy, mustard — look beautiful against the green forest and the palace walls, and long dresses work well on the terraces. Wear comfortable shoes for the paths and change for the photos if you want to.

How much does a Sintra photoshoot cost?
Our Sintra session is €450 for two hours with photographer travel included. If we shoot inside the Parques de Sintra parks, their €150 heritage image fee is paid on the day.
Can we take photos inside Pena Palace?
No. Photography is not allowed inside the monuments. Sessions take place in the park, on the terraces outside the palace and in the gardens.
What time should we start?
At opening time, before the tour groups, or in the late afternoon. We send you the exact plan for your date.
What if it's foggy?
Light mist looks beautiful in photos. If it is thick or raining, we move to the village or head down to the coast.
Can we propose at Pena Palace?
Yes, outdoors. The parks don't allow decor or exclusive use, so we choose a quieter corner and time it for fewer visitors.
Is Quinta da Regaleira included?
Quinta da Regaleira is managed separately and has its own rules for photo sessions. Tell us if you'd like it and we'll check what is possible for your date.
How long does it take to get from Lisbon to Sintra?
About 40 minutes by train from Rossio station, or 30 to 45 minutes by car depending on traffic.
