How a surprise proposal works with a photographer
Your partner should see nothing but a normal day out in Lisbon. Before the day, we agree on the exact spot, a meeting time and a small signal — a hand on the railing, a hat taken off, a text — that tells us you are about to ask. We arrive twenty to thirty minutes early, find the angle that shows both faces and the view, and wait with a long lens so we can stay at a distance.
When you kneel, we shoot continuously: the approach, the question, the reaction, the hug, the ring going on. Then we walk over, introduce ourselves and spend the rest of the session on relaxed portraits while you are both still glowing. Most couples say that half-hour after the "yes" gives them their favourite photos.
We plan around three things that matter most in Lisbon: light (the viewpoints change completely between sunrise and sunset), crowds (the famous spots are packed from mid-morning) and a backup in case of rain or wind.

Keeping it a secret
Book from an email your partner doesn't read and ask us to message you only on WhatsApp. On the day, a simple cover story works best: a walk to a viewpoint "for the sunset", a dinner reservation nearby, or a "free walking tour" that happens to stop at the right place. If your partner likes to plan every minute, tell us — we can suggest a spot you can reach naturally on your route.
Sunrise or sunset?
Sunrise gives you empty viewpoints and soft light; it is the only way to have places like Santa Luzia or the Rua Augusta Arch almost to yourselves. Sunset feels more natural for a proposal and the sky is often more dramatic, but you will share the view with other people. Our golden hour guide lists the exact times for every month.
If it rains or the wind picks up
We always agree a plan B within a few minutes' walk: the arcades around Praça do Comercio, a covered terrace or a quieter lane in Alfama. If the forecast is bad for the whole day, we move the proposal to another day of your trip at no cost.
The ring
Carry it in your hand luggage, never in a checked bag, and keep the box in a front pocket rather than a backpack in crowded places like Tram 28 or the viewpoints. Some people take the ring out of the box before the moment so there is nothing bulky to hide.
Flowers, a picnic or a "Marry me" sign
Small touches in public spaces — a bouquet, a picnic blanket, a handful of candles at a quiet spot — are easy and look lovely in photos. Large installations need a private venue or permission. In the Sintra parks, decor and exclusive use of an area are not allowed at all, so we plan something simpler there.

Frequently asked questions
How much does a proposal photographer cost in Lisbon?
Our proposal packages start at €290 for the moment plus a 30-minute session and at €390 with a full hour of engagement portraits. Sintra and Cascais are quoted with travel included.
How do you stay hidden?
We dress like any other visitor and use a long lens, so we can shoot from 15 to 30 metres away. We are in position before you arrive and only walk over after the ring is on.
What if my partner suspects something?
Keep the plan simple and the cover story believable. If the moment is not right, give us a different signal and we will follow you to the backup spot or wait for you to try again.
Can you recommend the best place to propose?
Yes. Tell us your dates, the style you imagine (quiet and private, or a big view) and what your partner loves. We send two or three options with photos, the best time and how busy each one gets.
What happens if it rains?
We agree a covered plan B near the main spot. If the whole day looks bad, we move the proposal to another day of your trip at no extra cost.
How quickly do we get the photos?
You get a sneak peek of edited photos within 48 hours, and the full gallery within 7 days.
Can we propose at Pena Palace or elsewhere in Sintra?
Yes, outdoors in the park and terraces. Parques de Sintra charges a €150 heritage image fee on the day and does not allow decor, tripods or exclusive use, so we plan the moment around those rules.
Can friends or family hide nearby to watch?
Yes. We tell them where to stand so they're out of the main frame, and we photograph their reactions too.
Do you photograph proposals at restaurants or hotels?
Yes, if the venue agrees. Tell us the place and we'll check the light and the best angle in advance.
