What an elopement in Lisbon can look like
A typical elopement day might start with getting ready in your hotel, a first look in a quiet lane of Alfama, a short ceremony at a viewpoint or on the coast, a toast, and portraits in the golden hour. Some couples do it in two hours; others spend the whole afternoon travelling from the city to the cliffs at Cabo da Roca.
Many couples take care of the legal side at home and hold a symbolic ceremony in Portugal — it keeps the paperwork simple and lets you choose any spot you like. If you want to marry legally in Portugal, speak to the Portuguese civil registry or a local planner early, as the process takes time.

Planning notes for an elopement in Portugal
Choosing the season
May, June, September and October give the best balance of light, warmth and crowds. July and August are hot and busy, so plan the ceremony for early morning or the last hour before sunset. Winter is quiet and often sunny, but pack a coat for the coast.
Public places and permissions
A small symbolic ceremony with just the two of you at a public viewpoint is normally fine if you are discreet and don't block the way. Anything with guests, chairs, amplified music or decor needs a private venue or permission from whoever manages the space. In Sintra, Parques de Sintra charges a heritage image fee for photo sessions and does not allow decor or exclusive use — our permits guide explains the details.
Celebrant, flowers, hair and a car
We can suggest trusted local suppliers for a celebrant, flowers, hair and make-up, and a vintage car. You book and pay them directly, and we coordinate the timeline so everyone arrives when the light is best.
After the ceremony
A long lunch in a restaurant with a view, a sunset boat on the Tagus or a fado dinner in Alfama — tell us what you have planned and we can photograph the start of it before we leave you to enjoy the evening.

Frequently asked questions
Can we legally get married in Portugal as foreigners?
It is possible but involves paperwork through the Portuguese civil registry and can take several weeks. Many couples marry legally at home and hold a symbolic ceremony here.
Do we need a permit to elope at a viewpoint?
A small, discreet ceremony without chairs, decor or amplified sound is usually fine in public spaces. Larger setups need permission or a private venue. Sintra's parks have their own fee and rules.
How many hours of coverage do we need?
Two hours covers a ceremony and portraits at one or two places. Four hours lets you add getting ready, a toast and a second location such as the coast or Sintra.
Can you recommend a celebrant and other suppliers?
Yes. We share suppliers we like working with, and you book them directly.
Can guests come?
Yes — elopements and small weddings of up to about 20 people. For larger groups we recommend a private venue.
