The view

Senhora do Monte is the highest of Lisbon's viewpoints, beside a tiny white chapel on top of the Graça hill. From the terrace the city spreads out below you: São Jorge Castle on the next hill to the left, the Baixa grid and the river ahead, and on clear evenings the red suspension bridge and the Cristo Rei statue far in the distance. Because the view faces west and south-west, the sun sets right in front of you for much of the year.

Sunset proposals here

The low stone wall, the pine tree and the city behind you make a classic proposal frame, and the golden light does the rest. The catch is that everyone else knows about it too: on summer evenings there can be dozens of people. We arrive early, pick a spot along the wall where the background is clean, and position ourselves among the other photographers so nobody notices one more camera.

If you want more privacy, we suggest the same view at sunrise (almost always empty) or the nearby Miradouro da Graça, a slightly lower viewpoint with shady pine trees, a kiosk café and a similar view towards the castle and the bridge.

Our Graça route

1. Senhora do Monte — portraits along the wall while the light turns gold.
2. Graça's quiet streets — tiled façades, trams and small squares on the way down.
3. Miradouro da Graça — the last warm light under the pines, then blue hour over the city.

Getting there

The walk up from the centre is steep. Take a taxi or ride-share to the top, or Tram 28 to Graça and walk the last five minutes uphill. We meet you at the chapel.

What to wear

At sunset everything turns warm, so light, soft colours glow and white looks golden. Bring a layer — it can be windy up here — and shoes you can stand in comfortably on the uneven stones.

A 60-minute Graça route with timings

On the 15th of October the sun sets at 18:59. We meet at the chapel at 17:55, shoot along the wall while the light warms up, walk down through Graça at 18:25 and finish at Miradouro da Graça under the pines for the last gold and the first blue light around 19:00.

• Alfama and Santa Luzia — downhill from Graça, ideal for a longer Signature session.
• The tram line through Graça — trams pass right by the square below the viewpoint.

Best months

From March to October the sun sets over the city in front of you. In mid-summer sunsets are after 21:00, so plan dinner afterwards; in winter they are early and the terrace is quieter.
